BYOK: Using Your Own API Key with Apply Maxxing
April 10, 2026
What BYOK means
Bring Your Own Key
BYOK stands for Bring Your Own Key. It means Apply Maxxing does not maintain its own AI infrastructure or charge a markup on AI usage. Instead, you connect your own API key from a language model provider — currently OpenAI or Anthropic — and the AI calls go directly from your machine to that provider.
Apply Maxxing never sees your API key, never handles your AI requests, and never charges you for AI usage beyond what you pay directly to the provider. Your subscription covers the application — not the compute.
Why it matters for privacy
No middleman means no exposure
Most AI-powered tools route your requests through their own servers. Your resume content, job descriptions, and profile data pass through their infrastructure before reaching the language model. That data may be logged, retained, or used to train future models depending on the provider's terms.
With BYOK, the request goes directly from your machine to the API provider under your account. Apply Maxxing is not in the network path. Your resume data does not touch Apply Maxxing's servers at any point in the AI workflow.
Your API key is stored in your operating system's secure keychain — the same mechanism used by banking applications and password managers. It is never written to a config file, never stored in a database, and never transmitted outside your machine.
What it costs
Less than you think
AI API costs are measured in tokens — roughly, the amount of text processed. A resume tailoring request typically processes 1,000–3,000 tokens. At current GPT-4o pricing, that is less than $0.02 per resume. For 10 tailored resumes a day, you are spending under $0.20 in API costs.
Most active job seekers using Apply Maxxing for a full month spend $2–5 in total API costs. Combined with the subscription or one-time purchase price, this is significantly cheaper than any AI career tool that bundles compute into its pricing.
You can set spending limits directly in your OpenAI or Anthropic dashboard. The cost is fully transparent and capped at whatever you set.
How to set it up
Three steps
Step 1 — Get an API key. Create an account at platform.openai.com or console.anthropic.com. Add a payment method and generate an API key. You do not need a paid subscription to either platform — API access is pay-per-use.
Step 2 — Open Apply Maxxing settings. In the application, navigate to Settings and find the API Key section. Paste in your key. Apply Maxxing will store it immediately in your OS keychain and confirm it is saved.
Step 3 — Done. All AI features are now active. Resume tailoring, scoring, and cover letter generation will work on every job you run. You can update or remove the key from settings at any time.
